Barker happy with his squad
At a time where AmaZulu needs to collect every point available in the Absa Premiership, new head coach Steve Barker says his players are mentally fit for the KwaZulu-Natal Derby against Maritzburg United on Friday night at Harry Gwala Stadium.
Barker said that he has seen lot of changes in the players’ attitude and that is one of the things he is proud of as he looks at fighting relegation.
“I am sensing a good attitude from the players and it seems like they are all hungry for an opportunity to play. It is good to know that everyone is putting their hand up especially at training and that might see us giving some players an opportunity that they have never had before,” said Barker.
Going to the Derby, Barker said he is aware that Maritzburg will not be an easy opponent but he is happy that the majority of the players are physically and mentally ready besides Marc Van Heerden.
“There is no doubt that the derby is going to be difficult. Maritzburg are a good side and I am sure they are expecting to get full points especially since playing at home. The players are all looking good and healthy and there is a great competition in the camp which is something positive.
“What is more encouraging is that the players themselves know how important a win is at this stage. That creates a good team work,” he said.
Although it might be too soon to judge the change that Barker has brought into the side, it has been noted that the players are fighting much harder on the pitch.
“I will not rest until the players perform to their full potential. When that happens I will know that we are moving towards a right direction.
“We have been doing a lot of hard work without the ball and also ensuring that we work on how we have been conceding goals before,” said Barker.
