Celtic, Ajax battle for Nedbank quarterfinal spot

Ajax Cape Town and Bloemfontein Celtic will meet in a cup game for the first time in almost a decade when they contest a place in the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup at Athlone Stadium on Friday, 20 March 2015, kick-off at 20h00.

The teams have clashed in just one previous cup match, a 2007 Absa Cup quarterfinal which the Cape side won 1-0 away from home thanks to a goal from Thembinkosi ‘Terror’ Fanteni.

Ajax may well see being drawn against Celtic as a good omen, as they went on to win the 2007 National Cup after beating the Bloemfontein side.

In all, the Urban Warriors and Phunya Sele Sele have met in 26 league and cup matches since 1999/2000. The Cape side has 11 wins compared to nine for Celtic, while six matches have been drawn.

Ajax boast an excellent home record against their green and white clad opponents, with nine wins and just one defeat from 13 matches. The most recent of those nine wins arrived on 26 November last year when the Urban Warriors triumphed 1-0 in a league clash.

Roger de Sa’s side earned their spot in the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup thanks to a 9-1 destruction of lower league side Mainstay United – a club record victory and the biggest win in the competition this year – while Clinton Larsen’s Celtic crushed local rivals Roses United 3-0.

Ajax come into the game in good form, having claimed back-to-back wins over SuperSport United and Black Aces in their most recent matches, while Celtic had won five straight league and cup matches until their most recent outing, a 3-0 loss away to Polokwane City.
