Chiefs through to TKO Semi-finals
Kaizer Chiefs overcame Chippa United 1-0 in a Telkom Knockout Cup quarterfinal match at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Sunday afternoon and they advanced to the semfinals.
Amakhosi, who have won the league cup a record 13 times, join Bloemfontein Celtic, Bidvest Wits and Polokwane City in the last four.
The Chilli Boys were the better side in the opening exchanges as they created goal-opportunities which they failed to convert in the first 10 minutes of the game.
Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune denied Mpho Mvelase with a decent save, before Andile Mbenyane fired wide of the target from close range.
United looked dangerous on the counter-attack and Mvelase found some space outside the Chiefs box in the 24th minute and he forced Khune into a low save.
However, the Chilli Boys conceded a penalty five minutes later when James Okwuosa was adjuged to have fouled Joseph Molangoane in the box.
Bernard Parker then stepped up and fired past United keeper Daniel Akpeyi to make it 1-0 to Chiefs much to the delight of the Amakhosi fans inside the stadium.
The hosts nearly responded with a goal in the 33rd minute, but South Africa international Khune brilliantly parried away Sizwe Mdlinzo’s deflected shot.
The visitors managed to contain United in the remaining minutes of the first-half and Chiefs were leading 1-0 at the interval.
In-form forward Samuel Julies, who had scored three goals in his last two competitive matches, was introduced by United coach Teboho Moloi in the 50th minute.
However, the Amakhosi defence which was led by Erick Mathoho locked solid with Willard Katsande working tirelessly in front of the backline.
Chiefs coach Steve Komphela pulled out Hendrick Ekstein in the 67th minute and he introduced Dumisani Zuma as the visitors looked to regain control of the game.
Khune had to produce two good saves to deny Julies in the latter stages of the match as United searched for a late equalising goal.
The Chiefs captain sustained an injury in stoppage time and he was replaced by Daniel Cardoso in goal as Amakhosi had used all their substitutes.
Cardoso was not beaten in stoppage time and ultimately, Chiefs ran out 1-0 winners on the day.
