Festive football feast on SuperSport this holiday season
December and January will deliver a feast of football on the World of Champions highlighted by El Clasico, the traditional showdown between Barcelona and Real Madrid, on December 18 (SS7 and Select 4).
Lionel Messi’s Barcelona are unbeaten in the last six league Clasicos (home and away) and have only lost against Real Madrid four times in the last 22 La Liga meetings, stretching back 11 years. But history will count for little in a fortnight: such is the form of both teams that Zinedine Zidane and his side have one of their best chances to go to the Camp Nou and come away with three points. Barcelona lead the La Liga standings, but as if to emphasise the endless rivalry, Real Madrid are second on goal difference.
Meanwhile, the group stages of the UEFA Champions League conclude by mid-December with two standout fixtures: Inter Milan versus Barcelona (December 10) and Bayern Munich against Tottenham Hotspur (December 11). These will be broadcast on SS6.
The big fixture in the UEFA Europa League sees Manchester United at home to AZ Alkmaar on December 12 (SS3).
Also in December, the recently acquired Carabao Cup enters its quarterfinal and semi-final stage. The last eight feature on December 17 and 18 with the first-leg semi-finals then taking place on January 6 and the second-leg playoffs on January 27.
Also in the UK, the 2020 FA Cup campaign restarts in earnest early in the year with round three on the weekend of January 4 and round four on the weekend of January 25.
In South Africa, the PSL takes a short break between Christmas and the new year, but matches come thick and fast both before and after. Local action includes the Telkom Knockout final between Maritzburg and Mamelodi Sundowns on December 14 (SS4) plus the very best of MultiChoice Diski Challenge action through this month and next. This includes a festival day in December and two more in January.
