Pirates register their first win of the year
Orlando Pirates secured their first win of 2017 after beating EC Bees FC 3-1 in a Nedbank Cup Last 32 match at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Buccaneers dominated proceedings from the onset and came close to opening the scoring in the eighth minute when a long range shot from Dove Wome shaved the wrong side of the upright.
Six minutes later Wome did find the back of the net after he was set through on goal by Mpho Makola and he made no mistake from roughly 14-yards out, 1-0.
In the 17th minute Bernard Morrison should have doubled the lead for Pirates when he met a cross from Wome, but his header struck the woodwork.
Ten minutes later Thamsanqa Gabuza missed a golden chance to score the Buccaneer’s second of the afternoon when he met a cross from Morrison, but his close-range header sailed wide under no pressure from the defence.
Pirates continued to control the game, but only took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Seven minutes into the second half the Buccaneers did finally double their lead when a super long range free-kick from Makola found the corner of the net, 2-0.
Three minutes later Bees pulled a goal back after some sloppy defence allowed Bongani Chikila to break through on goal and he made no mistake with just the keeper to beat, 2-1.
Pirates restored their two goal advantage in the 66th minute when Wome drove into the box and squared for Gabuza who had an easy tap in from close range, 3-1.
Issa Saar should have put the result beyond doubt ten minutes later when he was afforded a free header inside the box, but he squandered the opportunity as his effort shaved the post.
Nonetheless, Pirates held on for their first victory in 12 matches in all competitions while Bees exited the Nedbank Cup.
