Sundowns eliminate St Michel to move to the next round
Goals from Surprise Moriri and Katlego Mashego were enough to dispatch Seychelles Champions St Michel 3-0 in the Champion’s League match played at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
This victory sees the Brazilians advancing to the next round of the continental tournament with a 4-1 aggregate win following their 1-1 draw in the first leg.
It is the Brazilians that opened the scoring in the seventh minute thanks to a penalty that was well taken by Moriri, putting his side into a 1-0 lead after Mzikayise Mashaba was brought down inside the box.
Sundowns kept up the pressure and created more scoring opportunities keeping the visitors on the back foot.
St Michel tried to test Sundowns goalkeeper Mweene, but the effort was not powerful enough to caus harm for the Brazilians in the 28th minute.
Six minutes later Mame Niang came close to doubling Sundowns’ score, but he was denied by the St Michel’s goalkeeper.
This saw Sundowns going into the halftime break leading 1-0.
In the second half Sundowns came back strong with Zwane testing the visitors’ goalkeeper in the 48th minute.
Just four minutes later it was no surprise when Moriri banged in a second goal for the Brazilians as he lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper.
In the 72nd minute Mashego came close to extending Sundowns lead when his free kick went inches wide of the goalpost.
Sundowns’ third goal came in the dying minutes of the match when Anthony Laffor made a run on the right hand side of the pitch before playing a low cross into the box, which was easily tapped in by Mashego for a 3-0 victory.
