SuperSport United – road to the TKO final
SuperSport United have overcome Free State Stars, Bidvest Wits and Orlando Pirates to secure their first final appearance in the Telkom Knockout era (2006 onwards).
Beginning in the last 16 round, United edged Free State Stars at Lucas Moripe Stadium in early October thanks to a late goal from former Ea Lla Koto player Dove Wome. It was not the most fluent performance in Gordon Igesund’s first cup match in charge of the team, but the Tshwane side did enough to progress.
They then came up against former coach Gavin Hunt and his Bidvest Wits side, but goals from Wome and Lebogang Manyama secured a deserved 2-1 win in Johannesburg and put them into the semifinals.
The last four has generally been a stumbling block for Matsatsantsa in the Telkom Knockout, with the team failing to progress past this penultimate hurdle in both 2012 and 2013. However, it was a case of third time lucky in 2014, with goals from Manyama and Wome seeing them to a 2-0 victory away to Orlando Pirates at Orlando Stadium, the same venue in which the final will be held this weekend.
