We have to defend the MTN8 – Komphela

Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela says his team must make it their mission to defend the MTN8 cup.

The Amakhosi, who claimed the MTN8 last year after defeating Orlando Pirates in the final, will face Maritzburg United in the quarterfinals at FNB Stadium tonight.

The match will be Komphela’s first competitive outing in charge of Chiefs, and in a twist of fate he will face the very team he led into the top eight last season.

Nonetheless, Komphela is confident that his team will play according to his plan and advance into the semifinals.

“We have a plan well worked out for the match. The message is clear, and I reminded the guys that this trophy is ours and we have to go out there and defend it,” Komphela said on Chiefs’ official website.

The coach added: “It is not easy at the start of the season to ascertain the fitness of the players. But, those that will be included in the team, will do the job for us. We are ready and looking forward.”

Ajax Cape Town and Bidvest Wits have already booked their places in the final four after respective victories over Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United on Tuesday.

Wednesday’s other semifinal sees Mamelodi Sundowns host Bloemfontein Celtic.
