Will Orlando Pirates Win Absa Premiership?
Orlando Pirates have won Premier Soccer League four times – 2000/01, 2002/03, 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons. In the last two 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons Orlando Pirates won the league despite trailing behind in the early games of the season.
For an example in the 2010/11 season after the first 6 games of the season Orlando Pirates was ranked number 4 with 11 points vs. the Mamelodi Sundows which was leading with 15 points. In the 2011/12 season Orlando Pirates was ranked number 6 after six games with 10 points vs. the log leader SuperSport United with 14 points.
In both season Orlando Pirates lifted the cup despite the fact that they had a relatively “poor” start to the season.
Pirates is currently ranked number 3 with 11 points after 6 games trailing Kaizer Chiefs which leads with 18 points. Orlando Pirates are the Black Label Cup winners and MTN8 Wafa Wafa finalists. They are winning games and playing very well as a unit. Most importantly they are scoring goals, currently averaging 1.83 goals per match in the Absa Premiership League, the highest average in the league.
What would be bigger than winning Absa Premiership? I would imagine that the main goal for Pirates now is winning the league, especially after losing MTN8 to Kaizer Chiefs.
Kaizer Chiefs has a 7 point lead on Pirates and they are probably as determined and committed to winning the league. If Kaizer Chiefs does not flop and flame out (like they did last season) they have a better chance of lifting the cup. But that is a big if.
Pirates has shown that they have the leadership and discipline to see them through ruff starts like they had this season, the question then is – can they do what they did in 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons again?
