SuperSport beat Highlands to move top
Dean Furman’s goal helped SuperSport United beat Highlands Park 1-0 in an Absa Premiership game at the Makhulong Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday night.
The win took Matsatsantsa to the top of the league log standings, while the Lions of the North remain 15th on the table.
The visitors fired the first warning when Mandla Masango forced Highlands goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini with into a save just two minutes into the game.
The Zimbabwean shot-stopper was also alert 10 minutes later denying SuperSport forward Thabo Mnyamane with a decent save.
But Matsatsantsa’s pressure paid off in the 22nd minute when Dean Furman made it 1-0 to SuperSport with a left-footed finish.
The Lions of the North tried to respond with a goal a few minutes later, but SuperSport defender Clayton Daniels made a crucial tackle to deny the home side.
Daniels and his fellow Matsatsantsa defenders stood firm at the back in the remaining minutes of the first-half and the visitors were leading 1-0 at halftime.
Charlton Mashumba, the Highlands striker, who was looking lively for his side unleashed a shot which narrowly missed the target nine minutes after the restart.
But SuperSport still looked threatening each time they pushed forward and in the 63rd minute, Kapini had to produce a great save to deny Jeremy Brockie from close range.
The Lions of the North came very close to equalising seven minutes later when Khethukuthula Zwane controlled the ball beautifully before firing inches wide of the target.
Mnyamane tried to double the visitors’ lead in stoppage time, but Kapini was well-positioned to make a save and ultimately, SuperSport walked away 1-0 winners in the end.
