Tinkler – We are underdogs
Orlando Pirates stand in coach Eric Tinkler believes the Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs will be a test of their character as they’re going to the match as underdogs.
Tinkler was appointed as the caretaker coach following the resignation of Vladimir Vermezovic after their 2-1 loss to Maritzburg United last Tuesday.
On the other hand, Stuart Baxter’s boys have defeated Bidvest Wits 3-0 on Wednesday night and they’re favourites to win on the weekend and continue to sit as number on the log with 33 points.
However, the Buccaneers will hope to stun Amakhosi as they face off in their first derby this season, they occupy position seven with 18 points.
“Yes, we’re going to the match as underdogs because Chiefs are on fire this season, unbeaten and they’re off a fantastic result against Wits,” said Tinkler.
“It’s going to be an extremely tough game for us, our performances haven’t been that great since the passing of Senzo Meyiwa, that was a massive loss to the club.
“The morale of the team has been very low and the confidence as well and now with the coach leaving – it becomes important for me to rebuild that confidence.
“I have to do it in the derby and every player is motivated to play in the derby, you don’t get to play so much in these types of games in your career.”
The match gets underway at 15:30 and the venue is the iconic FNB Stadium, in Johannesburg.
